After the Peak: Where Steel Pipe Demand Is Really Heading in Late 2026

October 15, 2026 – A Forward-Looking Note from Sanonpipe

The "Golden September and Silver October" season is winding down. For most of the past two months, the conversation in the seamless steel pipe and welded steel pipe market has been about peak demand, tight production slots, and holiday logistics. Now that the rush is fading, a more useful question emerges: what happens next?

This update looks past the seasonal noise and focuses on where demand, supply, and pricing are actually heading in the final quarter of 2026, and what it means for buyers of carbon steel pipe, alloy steel pipe, and stainless steel seamless pipe.

The Peak Is Over, But the Pressure Has Not Disappeared

The end of the peak season does not mean the market suddenly becomes easy. Three conditions are carrying over into the remainder of Q4.

First, mills are still working through backlogs built up before and during the National Day holiday. Production of API 5L line pipe, ASTM A106 Grade B seamless pipe, and ASTM A335 alloy boiler tubes remains committed well into November.

Second, freight capacity has not fully normalized. While rates have stopped climbing, available space on key routes is still tighter than usual, particularly for large-diameter seamless pipe and heavy-wall pipe shipments.

Third, compliance requirements, especially for Europe-bound carbon steel pipe and alloy steel pipe, continue to add processing time. Carbon documentation is no longer a formality; it is a scheduling factor.

The Real Question: Which Materials Will Stay Tight?

Not every grade behaves the same way after the peak season. The table below reflects what we are seeing in actual order flow.

Material Group Post-Peak Reality
API 5L X52 / X60 / X65 Still the highest-volume request. Supply is manageable, but lead times remain 35–45 days.
API 5L X70 Fewer qualified mills. Lead times of 50+ days are common for large-diameter orders.
ASTM A106 Grade B/C The most flexible grade. Availability is good, but price competition is intense.
ASTM A335 P11 / P22 Steady demand from power and petrochemical sectors. Lead times stable.
ASTM A335 P91 Remains a bottleneck. Heat treatment capacity limits output.
ASTM A213 T11 / T22 / T91 Quiet but consistent demand from boiler and heat exchanger manufacturers.
ASTM A312 TP304 / TP304L Balanced market. TP304L remains the preferred welding grade.
ASTM A312 TP316 / TP316L Growing demand from marine and energy transition projects.
ASTM A333 Grade 6 Niche but critical. Limited supplier pool for LNG and cryogenic applications.
ASTM A790 Duplex 2205 Long lead times. Offshore and chemical projects should plan well ahead.
EN 10210-1 S355J2H Stable supply, but documentation requirements for European projects are strict.
EN 10219-1 S355J2H Widely available. Quality consistency varies by mill.
NACE MR0175 Sour Service Certified mills only. Mandatory for H2S environments. Plan early.
Precision Seamless Tubes Steady demand from hydraulic and automotive sectors. HSLA grades gaining interest.

International Situation: Less Noise, More Structural Change

The headlines have calmed, but the underlying shifts have not.

Middle East shipping: The Strait of Hormuz remains stable but monitored. Risk premiums are now embedded in freight rates rather than added separately.

Europe carbon rules: Documentation requirements for steel pipe imports continue to tighten. Buyers are increasingly requesting sample carbon packages before confirming orders.

Energy prices: Oil remains range-bound, offering no major cost relief but also no new shocks.

Currency: The yuan remains relatively weak against the USD, which slightly favours buyers settling in dollars. EUR-based buyers see a smaller effect.

What This Means for Q4 Procurement

For buyers with remaining Q4 requirements, the priorities have shifted.

Delivery reliability now matters more than price. A slightly higher quote with a confirmed production window is usually the better choice.

High-specification grades need early commitment. ASTM A335 P91, ASTM A790 duplex, and API 5L X70 are not materials to order at the last minute.

Documentation should be requested before ordering, not after. This is especially true for EN 10210 and EN 10219 shipments into Europe.

Q1 2027 planning should start now. Mills are already accepting orders for January and February production.

A Practical Note on Incoterms

With freight still elevated and compliance costs rising, the choice between FOB and CIF has a larger impact on total cost than in previous years. Buyers with reliable forwarders may prefer FOB; those without may find CIF simpler despite the higher headline price.

Closing Note

The peak season is ending, but the market is not returning to a simple, price-driven environment. Buyers who understand which materials remain tight, which documentation requirements apply, and how logistics costs are structured will be better positioned for the months ahead.

Sanonpipe supplies a full range of seamless steel pipe, welded steel pipe, and structural hollow sections, including API 5L, ASTM A106, ASTM A335, ASTM A213, ASTM A312, ASTM A333, ASTM A790, and EN 10210 / EN 10219 grades.
