I. Standard Overview: The Cornerstone of Russian Cold-Drawn Seamless Tubes

GOST 8734-75 (full title: Seamless steel tubes cold deformed. Range) is the Russian (former USSR) dimensional/assortment standard for cold-drawn or cold-rolled seamless steel tubes. It came into force on 1 January 1977. The standard covers cold-formed seamless tubes (produced by cold rolling or cold drawing) with an outside diameter range of 1 mm to 200 mm and wall thickness from 0.2 mm to 22 mm.

The cold-drawing / cold-rolling process gives the tubes exceptionally high dimensional accuracy and excellent surface quality. Through cold deformation, the steel grains are refined, and the metal density and mechanical properties are significantly improved. This high-precision cold-forming technology makes the tubes far superior to conventional hot-rolled tubes in terms of dimensional tolerances, concentricity and surface finish – making them ideal for precision instruments, hydraulic systems, high-accuracy mechanical structures and many other demanding applications.

The standard is based on the international standard СТ СЭВ 1483-78 and was approved by the USSR State Committee for Standards on 13 October 1975 (Decree No. 2604). The current valid edition is the 2007 reprint.

Note: For tubes with outside diameter 20-90 mm, a stricter straightness requirement of ≤ 1 mm per metre length can be agreed upon.

IV. Theoretical Weight Calculation

GOST 8734-75 uses the following formula to calculate the theoretical weight per metre of tube:

M = 0.02466148 × s × (Dₙ − s)

Where:

M = weight per metre (kg)

Dₙ = nominal outside diameter (mm)

s = wall thickness (mm)

Steel density = 7.85 g/cm³

The standard appendix provides complete weight tables for all combinations of outside diameter and wall thickness from 0.3 mm to 24 mm. Examples:

For 30 mm OD × 2.5 mm wall, theoretical weight ≈ 1.696 kg/m

For 76 mm OD × 4.0 mm wall, theoretical weight ≈ 7.102 kg/m
